The poetics of southern space in V. N. Lyalin’s short story “A Chronicle of One Winter in Teberda”

Abstract.
The article examines the specificity of the artistic representation of the southern space in the short story “A Chronicle of One Winter in Teberda” by the contemporary Russian writer Valery N. Lyalin (1928-2010), whose work remains insufficiently studied in modern literary scholarship. The aim of the study is to identify the key features of the poetics of the southern space and to determine its function within the structure of the literary text. The scientific novelty of the research lies both in addressing the work of the writer, in which complex historical, social, and philosophical-moral issues relevant to the 20th century are reflected, and in a multidimensional analysis of the individual authorial interpretation of the southern space in the context of contemporary spiritual prose. The results demonstrate that the geographical South in the story acquires a complex symbolic function and appears not only as a natural locus, but also as a space of historical memory, suffering, and moral trials experienced both by the nation as a whole and by the individual. Natural images in the story are connected with the inner state of the characters and contribute to the representation of spiritual issues. In this regard, the southern space is interpreted as a key element of the artistic structure of the work.
