Abstract.
The article presents an analysis of the scholarly monograph by one of the leading contemporary Russian specialists on the avant‑garde, T. A. Ternova. The review traces how Ternova frames and addresses the question of the Russian literary avant‑garde of the first third of the 20th century in relation to the universals of civilization and the reception of those universals in the works of Russian avant‑gardists. Attention is drawn to Ternova’s careful analysis of urban images within the overall worldview of representatives of the Russian literary avant‑garde; the review emphasizes the book’s presentation of intertextual and intermedial links between the urban imagery of the Russian literary avant‑garde of the first third of the 20th century and the imagistic symbolism of their predecessors and contemporaries. The reviewer concludes that the monograph is of a high scholarly standard and makes a substantial contribution to current research on avant‑garde issues.
