Evolution of the entomological metaphor as a tool for social modeling: from Maurice Maeterlinck’s essay to Bernard Werber’s novel

Abstract.
This article provides a comparative analysis of the entomological metaphor as a form of representing social structures in Maurice Maeterlinck’s essay “The Life of the Bee” (1901) and Bernard Werber’s novel “The Prophecy of the Bees” (2021). The aim of the research is to identify the evolutionary vectors of the beehive image in literary discourse – from the symbolist interpretation of the “spirit of the hive” to the postmodern model of collective intelligence as a tool for global survival. The scholarly novelty of the work is defined by the original juxtaposition of these texts within the context of shifting cultural paradigms, allowing for the explication of the transformation in the perception of nature from metaphysical contemplation to ecological pragmatism. The study examines in detail the hierarchical structure, mechanisms of labor division, and decision-making within the bee colony as projections of human society. The results demonstrate that while in Maeterlinck’s essay the bee colony serves as a mystical prototype of an ideal and inscrutable order, in Werber’s novel it is transformed into an applied strategy for preserving civilizational memory and a foundation for designing a new socio-biological identity. It is established that the evolution of the bee image in literature reflects a transition from aestheticizing the mystery of natural existence to searching for functional models of human self-organization under the conditions of an anthropogenic crisis. A comparative analysis of the images of the bee and the ant reveals specific authorial strategies in interpreting the phenomena of industriousness and social duty. The study further demonstrates how intermedial and interdisciplinary approaches in Werber’s prose re-evaluate Maeterlinck’s classical natural-philosophical ideas, transforming the entomological object into a tool for social forecasting.
