Abstract.
The aim of the study is to determine how the methods of representing linguocultural realia depend on their type, the degree of cultural familiarity of the space, and cartographic tradition, using European, American, and African French-language geographic maps from the 18th century as the research material. The article clarifies a working definition of linguocultural realia as applied to the map genre, develops a typology adapted to it consisting of four groups, describes five methods of representing realia, and presents a comparative analysis of a corpus of 12 general-purpose and regional geographic maps. The scientific novelty lies in the fact that, based on French-language maps of the 18th century, it is established for the first time that the methods of representing linguocultural realia are regularly determined by their type and by the degree of cultural familiarity of the territory depicted on the map. It is also shown for the first time that the most productive models are not isolated but combined models of conveying realia. In addition, the study is the first one to reveal differences in the set of dominant methods of representation on maps of Europe, America, and Africa. The results demonstrate that onomastic and political-administrative realia are most frequent; for European material, multilayered doublet and hybrid forms are characteristic, for American material, hybrid and functionally translational models prevail, and for African material, transliteration and explanatory elements are most common.
