Lexical-semantic and word-formation processes in the lexicon of visual art (based on the German language)

Abstract.
The study aims to identify the dominant types of semantic transitions and prevailing word-formation models within the lexicon of visual art in German-language art historical discourse. The scientific novelty of the research lies in the fact that, for the first time, it examines in their interconnection the lexical-semantic and word-formation processes occurring with linguistic units that enter the lexicon of visual art from other semantic fields. The study establishes that the primary lexical-semantic process observed during the transition of linguistic units from various domains into the lexicon of visual art is semantic derivation, which is carried out through metaphorical transfer according to specific models and through the expansion of semantic meaning. The structural adaptation of these lexemes to art historical discourse occurs due to word-formation processes such as compounding and derivation. Compounding results in units that bear traces of interdisciplinary synthesis, while derivational processes ensure the grammatical and syntactic functioning of the lexemes that have acquired new meanings within the analyzed lexicon.
