Abstract.
The study aims to identify the universal and individual-authorial parameters of the frame narrative genre in the oeuvre of Pier Paolo Pasolini. The article examines the theoretical framework of the concept of “framing”, relying on the works of G. Bateson, E. Goffman, G. Genette, and P. A. Grintser in a comparative aspect. Within the basic genre model of the frame narrative, the ancient Indian origins (Panchatantra, Hitopadesha) and their transformation in the poem “The Ashes of Gramsci”, the collection “Ali with the Blue Eyes”, and the cinematic “Trilogy of Life” are identified and analyzed. The scientific novelty of the study is determined by its approach: for the first time, using the material of P. P. Pasolini’s literary and cinematic works, a segment of Pasolini’s poetics of framing is described and systematized, including such features as the poetics of the unfinished, the rejection of the authoritative narrator, the marginalization of the hero, free indirect discourse, and self-portraiture. The study establishes that Pasolini, drawing on the ancient Indian and Western European traditions of the frame narrative, radically reimagines the role of the narrator and the structure of diegesis, replacing hierarchical storytelling with a horizontal montage of speech, which brings his poetics closer to the Dantean model of “The Divine Comedy”.
