Abstract.
The study aims to identify gender-conditioned features of the linguistic personality of 18th-century political figures based on the epistolary heritage of Empress Catherine the Great and Prince G. A. Potemkin-Tavrichesky. The article systematically examines three levels of the linguistic personality according to Yu. N. Karaulov’s model: the verbal-semantic, the linguo-cognitive, and the motivational-pragmatic. At each level, the study analyzes the features of the correspondents’ idiolects: evaluative vocabulary, systems of address and intensifiers, conceptual dominants and methods of modeling reality, as well as differences in communicative strategies. Special attention is paid to comparing gender and status factors that influence the speech behavior of the participants in the correspondence. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the fact that, for the first time, gender-conditioned differences in the structure and functioning of two idiolects of 18th-century state officials have been identified and systematized using Karaulov’s three-level model of linguistic personality, and their dependence on communicative tasks and socio-role attitudes has been clarified. The results demonstrate that Catherine the Great’s linguistic personality is characterized by pronounced dialogicity, a developed system of emotive and affective means, and a tendency toward hypocoristics, whereas G. Potemkin’s idiolect is marked by lapidarity and a dominance of business and military-administrative registers.
