Semantic transformations of German temporal prepositions in digital communication

Abstract.
The aim of the study is to identify the general tendencies governing changes in the semantic structure of the German temporal prepositions “vor”, “nach”, “während”, “seit”, and “bis” in the context of digital communication. Based on the DWDS corpus, the expansion of the semantics of these prepositions in new communicative conditions is examined. The scientific novelty lies in the fact that, for the first time, semantic shifts in the group of temporal prepositions are described as an interconnected process, and the concept of the preposition’s point of conceptual instability is introduced. The results show that the expansion of the meanings of prepositions in digital communication relies on traditional metaphors of time, yet the digital environment itself changes their pragmatic load. These shifts are reduced to three general tendencies: increased temporal granularity, whereby ever smaller intervals become meaningful; punctuationalization of interval meanings, whereby long processes are conceptualized as instantaneous events; and the normalization of formerly peripheral modes, such as constant availability, multitasking, and blurred boundaries.
