Erotic euphemisms in I. A. Bunin’s “Dark Avenues” cycle: lexical-semantic and functional-pragmatic aspects

Abstract. The aim of the study is to establish the linguistic mechanisms underlying the functioning of erotic euphemisms in I. A. Bunin’s cycle “Dark Avenues”, which determine their role in the implicit representation of intimate semantics and in the lexico-semantic organization of Bunin’s erotic narrative. The article examines the lexico-semantic models of euphemistic nomination, the contextual conditions under which erotic meaning is actualized, and the functional-pragmatic role of euphemistic units in the literary text. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the comprehensive description of erotic euphemism as an element of the lexico-semantic organization of Bunin’s text and in the identification of its main semantic models and textual functions. The study shows that erotic euphemisms in “Dark Avenues” are realized and acquire contextual semantic determinacy primarily through metaphorization, metonymic shift, semantic indeterminacy, periphrastic designation, and contextual implication. It is established that these units perform mitigating, aestheticizing, and stylistically organizing functions, maintaining a balance between the explicitness of erotic content and the artistic restraint of its expression. Comparison with Chinese translations reveals zones of semantic stability, as well as cases of attenuation or explication of intimate subtext in interlingual interpretation.
