DEVICES TO FIGHT ENEMY SHIPS USED AT THE ANCIENT PERIOD

Abstract. The basic weapon of the big ancient warship was a battering ram, the earliest mentions of which refer to the VI century BC. The first battering rams had rather simple form. Later on they were made in the form of the head of a certain animal, boar or raptorial bird. Except for battering rams, they also used towers, from which soldiers bombarded the enemy with flame projectiles, and various kinds of catapults. To join boarding fight the crew used hooks, grapplers, so called "iron claws", and a harpax - a special beam with a cramp iron at the end that was fired off from the catapult.
