ON EXCESSIVENESS OF THE RUSSIAN ALPHABET: THE HARD SIGN

Lavoshnikova Elina Konstantinovna
Lomonosov Moscow State University

Abstract. The article presents information on the Russian orthography reforms. By numerous examples the author shows the difficulties occurring among the native speakers while choosing the right spelling - with the hard or soft sign. The paper discusses the excessiveness of the old and new Russian alphabet: the researcher doubts the necessity of the hard sign, which has no special semantic load in the modern Russian language but complicates the orthographic rules. The author proposes to exclude Ъ (the hard sign) from the modern Russian language and to replace it with the soft sign, not with apostrophe, as it was after the Decree of 1918.
