Abstract. The article discusses the problem of genesis of science in the society. The author analyzes the existing approaches to this issue basing on a particular science. Considering science as theoretical and systematized knowledge, the researcher comes to the conclusion that its origin occurred in ancient times, in ancient Greece. Formation of science as a social institution took place in the period of the modern age. Change of science is related to change of the society itself, first of all, to development of the material sphere, and then - to change in public consciousness.
