BORROWED CHARACTERS IN THE FIRST CHINESE ORACLE BONE SCRIPTS JI?G? W?N

Abstract. The article examines and analyzes cases of character borrowing in the period of ancient oracle bone scripts ji?g? w?n (the XIV-XI centuries B.C.). The study was conducted using the data of Chinese lexicography and historiography; copies of written monuments of the Yin dynasty served as research material. The author argues that borrowed characters were widely used to represent phonemes already in the period of the Chinese language formation (the Shang dynasty).
