Abstract. In the article the conceptual approach of the outstanding Russian philologist, literary critic and teacher Stepan Petrovich Shevyryov (1806-1864) to the problem of the development and strengthening of national consciousness based on the spiritual-mental potential of the Russian language as the key factor of the cultural identification of people is analysed.
