Abstract. The article is devoted to the coverage of the Buryat legends of totemic character. Ancient plots connected with the folklore totems, in particular, with bull and swan, are described in the historical-typological aspect. The process of the formation of the plot of the legends about totems by the example of the transference of the mythological story about the bull-ancestor into the cult of Buha-noen is observed. The modern existence of the legends about totems is proved by the story told by the narrator Sh. D. Bayminov, by the renewed thanksgiving services in honour of the totem Buha-noen, by worshipping the totemic cult places.
