WOLF OR SHEEP? (TO SEMANTICS OF "PREDATORY" AND "GENTLE" IN I. A. GONCHAROV’S CREATIVE WORKS)

Abstract. The author considers the functioning of the motives complex associated with the image of a wolf in I. A. Goncharov’s creative works. Successfulness, luck both in love and in social spheres are typical of heroes-wolves, while heroes-sheep in most cases are victims of more aggressive and ambitious characters. I. A. Goncharov’s creative works are not only clearly associated with the previous tradition, but, as might be expected, to some extent help correct A. Grigor'ev – N. Strakhov’s conception considering the Russian literature as the constant struggle between "gentle" and "predatory" types.
