Dushenkova Tat’yana Rudol’fovna
Udmurt Institute of History, Language and Literature Ural Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences

Abstract. The article considers the notion "oskon" ‘faith; hope’ and "vos’" ‘praying’; sacrifice; religion, faith, faith confession’ in the Udmurt language. The author’s interpretation of the sound semantics of the word by the Udmurt writer P. M. Zakharov is scrutinized. A special attention is given to the semantics expansion of the word "oskon" and appearing of new words on the base of the given radical. The modifications are concerned with the attitude change to the religion in whole and in the society of the end of 20 th and beginning of 21 st centuries.
Key words and phrases: вера, надежда, религия, моление, лексика, изменение семантики, faith, hope, religion, praying, vocabulary, semantics change
