Abstract. The article analyses the ideas from basic theories of learning that can be used to form some notions and build models of the learning process when designing a course of English for specific purposes. The effect of different theories of learning – behaviorism, mentalism, cognitivism, affective factors and language acquisition – on the teaching of a foreign language for specific purposes is revealed.
