ATTEMPT OF CONTRASTING SACRED EPITHETS OF RUSSIAN AND ENGLISH LANGUAGES

Kazakov Grigorii Aleksandrovich
Moscow Institute of Linguistics

Abstract. Sacred epithets, i.e. the words describing individuals and objects in their relation to spiritual life, are one of the groups of sacred terms (i.e. words designating the major notions of a certain religious world-view). A contrastive study of Christian sacred epithets in the Russian and English languages (in particular, the naming of the Virgin and the saints, adjectives related to the notion of hell, lexemes "pagan", "orthodox", "catholic", the names of Holy Week days, etc.) reveals a semantic shift between them, which is important to be aware of in translation.
Key words and phrases: сакральный, христианский, русский, английский, лексика, перевод, sacred, Christian, Russian, English, vocabulary, translation
