Abstract. In the article the categories of prospection and retrospection as leading fundamentally significant text-formative categories of a scientific text are considered. The main features of the categories are described: extralinguistic base, interdisciplinary approach to the study, the dualism in a text discourse, the presence of two levels of study (underlying and surface). Special attention is paid to the analysis of particular standard functions of the categories.
