PHENOMENON OF CHILDHOOD IN THE TRADITIONAL CULTURE OF CHINA (BY THE EXAMPLE OF A FOLK NEW YEAR PICTURE)

Abstract. The article makes an attempt to represent the phenomenon of childhood in the traditional Chinese culture. The goal of the paper is to identify the important aspects of this phenomenon. According to the author, a traditional xylographic picture may serve as a best tool for investigating the world of childhood in the Qing dynasty (1644-1911). The research was conducted by the materials of the subjects of the pictures of the regional centre Yangliuqing having a long history. The article analyzes the images of children in the Yangliuqing pictures and reveals the potential of the majority of them as an important source for investigating a phenomenon of childhood.
