ETYMOLOGICAL MEANING OF THE YUKAGHIR ETHNONYMS WАДУЛ AND АЛАЙИИ

Institute of Researches in Humanities and Problems of Smaller Peoples of the North of Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences

Abstract. The article for the first time reveals the etymological meaning of ethnonyms wадул and алайии . Wадул is a self-denomination of the Tundra Yukagirs, алайии is a self-denomination of the Tundra Yukaghir clan. The structural and morphological, word-formation and semantic analysis of the self-denomination of the Tundra Yukagirs shows that the ethnonym wадул (as well as одул of the forest Yukagirs) can be translated as "a hard-working man, who does everything carefully, well". The etymological analysis of the ethnonym алайии reveals that this word probably means "strong, persistent, hard-willed people".
