ON CONSONANT DUPLICATION IN THE RUSSIAN LANGUAGE

Abstract. The article touches on the problem of orthography of the loan words with consonant duplication in the aspect of the history of the Russian language. To reveal the reasons for preservation or simplification of the duplicated consonants the author analyzes the spelling adopted in the pre-reform orthography. Appealing to the history of Russian spelling allows identifying many orthographic tendencies functioning on loan words adoption and explaining the modern image of the borrowings. Preserving the duplicated consonants in the recipient language is conditioned by the phonetic, etymological and semantic reasons.
