DISCURSIVE AND INTONATION CHARACTERISTICS OF THE ENGLISH EMPHATIC STRUCTURE "IT IS... THAT..."

Abstract. On the basis of discursive and intonation analysis the author identifies the main discursive strategies implemented by the English split construction " It is... that ..." in oral journalistic speech and describes their intonation arrangement. The main discursive strategies of the construction are the rhetorical, text-forming and contrasting ones. The article also shows the high contextual dependence of the construction, as well as a pronounced thematic potential of the element that is put forward.
