Abstract. The article aims to study the language units forming the lexical field "human intellectual abilities" in the Turkic-Tatar monument of the XIII century "Q?ssai Yosif" (Tale of Yusuf) by Qol Ghali. It’s the first attempt to study the linguistic expression of a human inner world by the material of the medieval monuments in the Turkic studies and Tatar philology. The paper analyzes semantic peculiarities of functioning of the language units ?а?л / "mind, intelligence", ?илм / 'science, knowledge ', ф??(е)м / "reason, comprehension" (in "Q?ssai Yosif" they acquired a markedness of elitism) and the lexeme хатер / "thought, soul" (which is used in the description of different personages). The author explores the specifics of using the mentioned lexemes in the modern Tatar literary language. The word-painter Qol Ghali described precisely the intellectual abilities characteristic for the poem’s personages by the semantic differences of the lexemes under study.
