CONTEXTUAL-PRAGMATIC CHARACTERISTIC OF THE WAYS OF TRANSFER OF THE VERB ‘MAFAN’ INTO THE RUSSIAN LANGUAGE IN V. TIKHOMIROV’S TRANSLATION OF THE EPIC POEM "BEOWULF"

Abstract. This article deals with the ways of the transfer into the Russian language of the Old English verb ‘magan’ in V. Tikhomirov’s translation of the epic poem "Beowulf". The analysis of the translation solutions is carried out on the basis of the method of contextual pragmatics and concerns the cases of the interpretation of the functional meaning of ‘magan’ when it expresses the nuances of deontic and epistemic modalities. The purpose of the research is contextual-pragmatic justification of the choice of translation means and the identification of the degree of their correspondence with the conveyed meanings.
