Abstract. The article touches upon the Christian and enlightening activity of Bishop Iosif Chepigovskii in Ossetia. The main content of the study is an analysis of his translation work. Basing on the conducted research, the author concludes that the books of educational nature in the Ossetian church language, published by Iosif Chepigovskii, objectively contributed to the further development of the Ossetian written language and the introduction of enlightening elements in South Ossetia.
