DICHOTOMIC PERIODS IN GRAMMATICAL TRADITION OF ENGLISH LINGUISTICS

Tsarikaeva Fatima Akhsarbekovna
North Ossetian State University named after K. L. Khetagurov

Abstract. The article analyzes two periods of studying the complex sentence in the history of English linguistics: the first one is dichotomic (the end of the XVII - the beginning of the XVIII century), arising from the application of categories and methods of analysis typical of logic and rhetoric, and the second is the period of the new dichotomic theory (systemic grammar ), formed in the 60s of the XX century through the use of system-structural methods of research, as a result of which a system of dependent clauses of complex sentences was constructed basing on two criteria: 1) form, meaning and function; 2) structure.
Key words and phrases: английский язык, грамматика, синтаксис, сложное предложение, комплексное предложение, главная часть, придаточная часть, the English language, grammar, syntax, complex sentence, main clause, subordinate clause
