"TO BE SURE I DID SAY, THAT THE VERSES OF LUCILIUS DID NOT RUN SMOOTHLY": "AN ALLUSION TO HORACE" BY ROCHESTER

Titova Anna Vladimirovna
Ryazan State University named for S. A. Yesenin

Abstract. The article is devoted to the analysis of one of the satires of the English poet-libertine John Rochester. A number of literary and biographical allusions which found expression in the poem are presented. The author draws a parallel between "An allusion to Horace" by Rochester and the 10th satire of the first book of Satires by Horace in order to identify the similarities and differences in the structure and subjects of the works. Besides, the analysis of the relationship between John Rochester, John Dryden and Thomas Shadwell allows revealing the peculiarities of the object of criticism given by the poet-libertine in the poem better. This research also allows providing a more complete presentation of personal and literary debates of the second half of the XVII century which influenced the further development of the British culture.
