Abstract. The article is devoted to the Horatian plot of "farewell to the book" and its transformation in the "farewell elegy" of the Russian poet of the XVIII century S. Yavorsky. In the epistle of Horace "To His Book" the metaphorical image of the book-"naughty child" which wants to get rid of the guardianship of the author-"father" is created. In the creative heritage of Yavorsky the plot changes in accordance with the transitional stage of the Russian culture, in the text two biblical metaphors can be found: book-"child" and Eternal book-"judge", and the author’s image appears to be ambivalent: it has the features of the baby, trembling before the God court, and the careful parent who has prepared the shelter for his offspring - the library.
Key words and phrases: феномен книги в античной культуре, феномен книги в российской культуре XVIII века, метафорические образы книги и автора, метафора книга-"дитя", метафора Вечная книга-"судия", the phenomenon of the book in the ancient culture, the phenomenon of the book in the Russian culture of the XVIII century, metaphorical images of the book and the author, metaphor book-"child", metaphor Eternal book-"judge".
