EVOLUTION OF THE CATEGORY OF COLLECTIVITY (BY THE MATERIAL OF COLLECTIVE NOUNS IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE)

Abstract. The article is devoted to one of the most important categories of the language - the category of collectivity. The main stages of its development are considered. An overview of this category is given from traditional and cognitive perspectives basing on the works of Russian and foreign scientists. The consideration of the category of collectivity in general and collective nouns in particular not only in synchronic/diachronic, but also in traditional/cognitive aspect is of certain practical and theoretical value to researches within this framework.
