Abstract. The article presents the research material on philological novel emotiveness. By the example of the work by P. V. Basinskii "Passions for Maxim. Gorky: Nine Days after Death" the author identifies the specifics of representing the relations between two great Russian writers M. Gorky and L. N. Tolstoy where the emotive plane is of interest not only from the viewpoint of reproducing the characters of the personalities under description but also from the viewpoint of exhibiting the writer’s philological, biographical, sociocultural knowledge. The paper contains theoretical provisions on the possibility to improve the certain general and specific methods when analyzing philological novel as a special narration.
