IRISH SAGAS AS ONE OF LITERARY SOURCES OF "THE CANTERBURY TALES" BY GEOFFREY CHAUCER

Lebedeva Ol'ga Vladimirovna
Yaroslav-the-Wise Novgorod State University

Abstract. Dwelling on influence of literary traditions on Geoffrey Chaucer’s style formation in "The Canterbury Tales" the author focuses on identifying peculiar national sources of this literary work. The analysis indicated intra-textual typological similarities between Irish sagas and Chaucer’s stories. In particular, the researcher mentions the following ones: story and thematic analogies, the system of motives, tendency to oral narration and etymological similarity of terms designating the saga and story genres. Such parallels allow considering Irish sagas as one of the small genre sources in the poet’s creative work.
