HANDWRITTEN HERITAGE OF THE KALMYK ECCLESIASTIC TSAGAN ATKHAEV

Abstract. The article describes the handwritten heritage of the Kalmyk Buddhist ecclesiastic Tsagan Atkhaev kept by his descendants in the village Ulan-Khol, Laganskii District of the Republic of Kalmykia. The collection of the Oirat manuscripts includes Buddhist canonical writings, a collection of stories about the benefits of reading "The Diamond Sutra", ritual texts, letters-prophecies and a large corpus of astrological texts, tables and calendars. The article also describes Tsagan Atkhaev’s autographs which were rewritten by him from the sources that were kept in the handwritten collections of other priests. Before describing the collection, the author gives a brief biography of Tsagan Atkhaev. As a result, the author comes to the conclusion that the manuscripts and wood-carvers that are kept in private collections may shed some light on the history of the Kalmyk culture and religion.
