Abstract. The purpose of the article is to consider in detail the problem of understanding the English-language Internet meme, which is an important part of virtual communication and represents the kind of multimodal online discourse. The findings of such characteristic features of understanding the English-language Internet meme as the ambiguity and multiplicity of possible interpretations, subjectivity and dialogic nature are the result of the research. Special attention is paid to the analysis of possible obstacles impeding an adequate understanding of the English-language Internet meme.
