Abstract. The attempt to build a hierarchy of the factors affecting the selection of translation version in conditions of ambivalence of the source text is an innovative component of the research. In the article the author considers the pragmatic and linguistic factors influencing the process and the result of the translation, specifies the notion of allegory, carries out the comparative analysis of the fragments of the original text and the text of translation, and identifies the role of interpretation at the pre-translation stage of work with the text of other cultures.
