Dagestan State Pedagogical University

Abstract. Borrowing words from other languages is one of the basic developmental trends of the lexical system of a certain language. There are different ways to form new meanings of the borrowed words (the so called metaphorical, functional and metonymical transfer). The paper examines the problems of developing the borrowed word polysemy and monosemy in the Kumyk language dialects. The authors aim to trace the processes of broadening and narrowing of the semantic range of foreign elements in the recipient language. The special attention is paid to the semantic transformations of Avarisms and Chechenisms.
Key words and phrases: заимствованные слова, многозначные слова, переносное значение, семантика, диалекты, кайтагский диалект, borrowed words, polysemantic words, figurative meaning, semantics, dialects, Kaitag dialect
