RECEPTION OF SHAKESPEARE’S DRAMATURGIC HERITAGE IN ENGLISH CONSCIOUSNESS OF THE XVII CENTURY

Abstract. The article analyzes provisions promoting the growth of interest for Shakespeare’s dramaturgic heritage in England of the second half of the XVII century. The author also presents different viewpoints of Shakespeare’s admirers (John Dryden, Lord Mulgrave) and opponents (R. Flecknoe, T. Rymer), which manifested themselves during a dispute on antique heritage’s value (argument between the "ancient" and "new"). The paper emphasizes the important role of John Dryden as a dramatist and theorist in the formation of the national identity of English drama.
