SOUND SYMBOLISM OF PEJORATIVES (BY THE MATERIAL OF V. I. DAL’S DICTIONARY)

Abstract. The article discusses the notion of "sound symbolism" and its relation to "pejorative character". It describes the results of the practical research of the phono-semantic ways of pejorative character expression in the Russian language by the material of V. I. Dal’s dictionary. The study confirmed the connection of labialization and the expression of pejorative character. The author identifies the connection of the velar obstruent [к], [г], [х] with the expression of pejorative character. The connection of the sounds [ш], [л], [д], [р] and the vowel "a" with the expression of pejorative character in the Russian language is revealed.
