COGNITIVE-DISCURSIVE APPROACH TO ANALYZING BRITISH POLITICAL SPEECH

Abstract. The article is devoted to the relevant in the modern information society theme of cognitive analysis of the English political discourse. The study focuses on the speech by the British Prime-Minister David Cameron in which he announced his intention to resign in October, 2016 after the majority of referendum participants voted for Britain’s exit from the European Union in June, 23, 2016. The author aims to create David Cameron’s verbal portrait, to identify his original verbal tactics by which the orator achieves his pragmatic purposes, to examine the lexical means for realization of the chosen tactics. The research is based on the cognitive-discursive approach to analyzing the explicit and implicit intentions of a certain political figure. The author shows the realization of the unified system of cognitive-discursive analysis in linguistics at the text and context levels. The findings can be used in the sphere of political linguistics, cognitive linguistics and rhetoric.
