Abstract. The article gives a brief overview of the main works on the history of the formation of the Tatar toponymy. The main points of the development of names philosophy in different epochs are described. The author traces interest in the study of the semantic content of the Tatar geographical names from antiquity to the XIX century. Attention is paid to the development of modern toponymic science. Studies on the Tatar toponymy are actively developing at the present time.
