THE CATEGORY OF "UNDERSTATEMENT" IN COMMUNICATIVE BEHAVIOR OF THE BRITISH, GERMAN AND RUSSIAN LINGUISTIC CULTURES’ REPRESENTATIVES

Abstract. The article provides an example of similar and different characteristics in communication styles of three cultures (Russian, British and German) in situations containing an element of understatement, concealing and deliberate reticence. The divergence of cultures can cause many cross-cultural misunderstandings. The author gives examples of such difficulties and suggests ways to overcome them. The textual basis for the study is English, German and Russian phrases taken from the contemporary fiction.
