Abstract. In this article the specificity of the archetypical imagery, based on the folklore and mythological thinking of the mountaineers, is analyzed. The functional predetermination of the symbols forming the basis of the national world view is revealed by the example of the works of the Balkar epic prose. Particular attention is paid to the peculiarities of the ethnic consciousness and the interconnection of the folk-poetic traditions in the cultural paradigm of the North Caucasian region.
