Abstract. The article for the first time examines the motives of bread and stone in the novel by M. E. Saltykov-Shchedrin "The Golovlyov Family". In this connection the author identifies their origin, the importance in the narrative and compositional structure and ideological content of the mentioned literary work, the shades of meaning in different contexts. The researcher justifies the thesis that the motives of bread and stone are the key elements of novel’s general motive structure which in many ways determines its coherence. The paper shows that the writer transforms Biblical stories and motives thus achieving philosophical depth when developing novel’s basic problems.
