DIPLOMATS’ DIARIES AND TRAVELOGUE GENRE EVOLUTION IN THE CHINESE LITERATURE OF THE END OF THE XIX - THE BEGINNING OF THE XX CENTURY

Abstract. The article examines the problem of genre evolution of travel essays which came out as a development of diary notes of the Chinese literary men of Song period (X-XII centuries). At the end of the XIX century travelogue genre referring to "polite literature" (Wen) became popular due to Chinese diplomats’ diaries. Traditional travel essays gradually acquire the features of European travelogue but at the same time they stay in touch with the classical Chinese literature.
