Abstract. The article deals with the system of plot composition in W. Thackeray’s fairy tale "The Rose and the Ring" consisting of three cycles concentrated around the central characters. The plot structure of each cycle includes four episodes arranged according to the similar principle: in the initial episode, the main character is selected from the general worldview, in the second one the establishment of new inter-subject connections occurs, in the third episode various forms of collision with death take place, and finally, the fourth episode includes the change in the hero’s status, both external (event-trigger) and internal (psychological).
