Abstract. The article analyses the main linguistic argumentation theories of the second half of the XX and the beginning of the XXI century. Continuity in the development of these conceptions is traced. Two prevailing approaches to argumentation studies in modern linguistics are distinguished and characterized: cognitive and functional, or communicative-pragmatic. Due to the multi-aspect and complex nature of the research subject the article justifies the necessity of using the integrated approach to the argumentation analysis for its adequate linguistic description.
