BYLICHKA GENRE IN A. N. TOLSTOY’S CYCLE "MERMAID TALES"

Abstract. The article is devoted to analysing the transformations of the folkloric mythological phenomena of folk culture in a literary text. Oral superstitious stories about meeting with devildom, based on the poetics of horrible, have survived till our time due to their captivating nature and acquired new relevance in a literary tale. In this connection, the paper analyses the structural-semantic and functional genre features of bylichkas and byval'shchinas in the context of the author’s own interpretations of folk demonology images, typical storyline components and the theme of folk "dual faith".
