PRECEDENT PHENOMENA FUNCTIONING IN THE MODERN ENGLISH NEWS ARTICLES

Abstract. The objective of the paper is to study the features of the English news articles and to identify the dominant functions of precedent phenomena in them that have necessary impact on the reader through the interrelation of a new text with the human’s cognitive base. The scientific novelty of the work is in the fact that for the first time it attempts to determine the functions of nationally marked precedent phenomena in the discourse of the modern English news media texts. The obtained results have allowed the authors to identify the features of a news article text, in accordance with which precedent phenomena perform four basic functions: pragmatic, nominative, modeling and informative ones.
