THEOPHANIES IN THE NOVEL "THE BROTHERS KARAMAZOV"

Submitted: 24.01.2018
Abstract. The article considers the religious and philosophical importance of artistic representation of theophanies in F. M. Dostoevsky’s novel "The Brothers Karamazov". After analyzing the literary text the researcher for the first time in literary criticism proves that theophanies, which Dostoevsky introduced in the books "Pro and Contra" and "The Russian Monk", discover religious peculiarities of Ivan Karamazov’s poem "The Grand Inquisitor" and Alexei Karamazov’s "Diary" devoted to Father Zosima. Accordingly, Ivan Karamazov’s poem represents the principles of Catholic spirituality, and Alexei Karamazov’s "Diary" - the principles of Orthodox spirituality. Thus the researcher identifies an important aspect of Dostoevsky’s vision of the western and Russian cultures considering their similarities and differences.
